Kaiser Permanente Colorado makes donation to Denver Public School on 9/11

September 11 is now a federally recognized Day of Service and Remembrance. By performing good deeds, and engaging in other forms of charitable service on this day, Kaiser Permanente Colorado joined people throughout the nation in rekindling the remarkable spirit of unity, service and compassion shared by so many in the immediate aftermath of the attacks.

On September 11, 2009, 20 Kaiser Permanente volunteers delivered more than 70 pieces of furniture to the Martin Luther King Jr. Early College, a Denver Charter School. The donation included chairs, tables, cubicles, file cabinets and a new desk for the Assistant Principal’s office. After delivering the two truckloads of furniture, volunteers spent the rest of the day performing various service projects to spruce up the school.

Kaiser Permanente Colorado adopted Martin Luther King Jr. Early College last year through a special DPS Partner Program. This nationally recognized day provided Kaiser Permanente Colorado the opportunity to further their contribution to the school and the overall wellness of the community.

CDC calls upon Kaiser Permanente to discuss practices for community healthy living initiatives

Kaiser Permanente Colorado’s Community Health Specialist, Monica Buhlig, was invited to present at a conference for the ACHIEVE (Action Communities for Health, Innovation, and EnVironmental changE) initiative sponsored by the Healthy Communities Program in the Division of Adult and Community Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

ACHIEVE is a granting system designed to enhance local communities’ abilities to develop and implement policy, systems, and environmental change strategies that can help prevent or manage health risk factors. The initiative focuses on obesity, diabetes, heart disease, nutrition, physical activity, and tobacco.

Kaiser Permanente Colorado devotes time and resources to promote its Community Health Initiatives for Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL), and has been working hard to implement this policy within the community. Kaiser Permanente has taken steps to improve communities’ healthy eating options, such as: sponsoring local farmer’s markets, improving vending machine choices, implementing school food standards, and placing nutrition labels on food. In addition, Kaiser Permanente promotes active living by increasing access to safe physical activity with more equipment at parks, increased safe walking and biking routes, and incorporating health elements into city plans.

Check out these sites for more information on ACHIEVE and Kaiser Permanente’s community benefit work in Colorado.

Kaiser Permanente employee named Histologist of the Year

Congratulations to Andrea DeJager, the Histology manager for Kaiser Permanente Colorado Regional Reference Laboratory, who was recently awarded Histologist of the Year by the Colorado Society for Histotechnology. DeJager has been directly involved with the society for ten years, and currently serves as vice-president.

The Colorado Society for Histotechnology is a non-profit organization designed to unite the histologic technicians and technologist in the State of Colorado by promoting higher standards in clinical methods and research.

What exactly is histology? It is a specialty subject within the field of Biomedical Science concerned with understanding cellular change, chemical composition, and the function of normal and abnormal tissue. Histotechnologists are responsible for preparing sections of body tissue on microscope-slides for examination by a pathologist or other medical scientists. The prepared tissue enables pathologists to identify signs of disease, illness, or malignancies in the body.

“It is a wonderful feeling to be recognized by your peers and I have enjoyed working with this organization tremendously,” says DeJager, “It gives me the opportunity to be involved in the field that I love and be a part of an era of development and improvement within this field.”

DeJager has worked in histology for about 30 years, and is dedicated to helping others enter the field as well. She works to maintain the excellence of this fine-tuned profession, and readily makes herself available to others, acting as their mentor.

“I believe it takes special people to work in this line of work, and applaud every histotech that practices,” added DeJager.

This is the second time DeJager has been named Histologist of the Year, she first received the award in 2007.
